“Test me in this,” says the Lord Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven…”

2021 – A year of opportunities

Next year is going to be very significant for The Point. There will be many opportunities, but for our Gift Days we are highlighting two:

  1. The Northern Arc Development – first houses to be completed
  2. The reopening of Schools and Colleges to outside visitors

Please pray for God’s provision for all that we need and pray about how God is calling you to respond.

Gift Day Targets 2020:

£20,000 (in one-off gifts)

+ £1,000 (per month increase in regular monthly giving)

What’s the money for?

The Northern Arc is the planned construction of 3,500 homes, 3 new schools, and a new community of over 10,000 people who are coming to Mid Sussex over the next 15 years. This will all be taking place right next to St Paul’s Catholic College – where The Point has been meeting and worshipping on Sunday mornings for the last 15 years! It really feels that God has put us in this place at this time for this purpose: to be his witnesses, to demonstrate his love to this new community. The work has already started. The people are coming to us. The first homes will be completed by the end of 2021 and both a new primary and secondary school are due to be opened in September 2023.

It is our dream to find a permanent home for The Point in the Northern Arc. We have partnered with Chichester Diocese and Hurstpierpoint College to bid for the new Secondary School to be a Church of England School and for The Point to be the church for this school (this bidding process is due to take place in April/May 2021). Our vision is to see a new facility that would be a church, school and community centre all on one site; to serve the community of the Northern Arc and beyond as we continue to fulfil our vision “to be a transforming presence in Mid Sussex.”

For this vision to become reality we need miracles! We are praying for:

  • Our bid to be successful for a new Church of England School;
  • Permission from all the relevant authorities (Education, Diocese, Planning, Developers) for a new, shared premises between church and school;
  • Provision of finances for this ambitious project;
  • 100s of new people to come to know Jesus!

Head of Operations

Clearly this is a large project and there are multiple authorities and agencies that would need to give us their support. Strategic decisions are already being made and we are feeling a real sense of urgency to engage in the process and prepare concrete proposals to share with decision makers as soon as possible. We understand that many key decisions will be taken in the next 6-12 months. Therefore, our trustees have taken the decision, to recruit a Head of Operations to help us work strategically in the coming months and be the Project Manager to realise our vision for The Point and the Northern Arc.

The new Head of Operations will not only work towards this exciting new opportunity but also head up our Operational Leadership Team and help us to work more strategically and effectively in all areas.

So, let’s pray wholeheartedly and let’s give generously so we can make this new appointment and see the vision become reality.

During lockdown our schools’ ministry has been heavily restricted. Despite this we have continued to support schools by supporting Head Teachers and doing video assemblies. Harvest Festival Services/assemblies were well received and appreciated in 4 primary schools. But we know that things will be opening up again soon and our local schools are very open to our involvement with many invitations now coming. We want to be in a position to increase our provision for youth, children and schools ministry (which in practice means increasing our staff hours to previous levels – hours were slightly reduced in January 2020).

Over the last few years our Youth and Children’s Pastors (Michael Holt and Liz Styles) have been building up a very effective schools ministry. We have been actively involved in 7 local schools (both Primary and Secondary) doing Christian Assemblies, RE lessons, lunchtime clubs and Prayer Spaces.

Liz is also now Co-Chair of Governors at Sheddingdean Community Primary School and Michael has been invited to run a mentoring programme at Burgess Hill Academy and to start the Alpha Course at St Paul’s Catholic College. This all links in very brilliantly with our regular Youth and Children’s ministry on Sunday mornings and mid-week. What if we could grow this ministry to other local schools?

We will be responding as a church on Sunday 15 and 22 November.
